When trans icon Charlie Craggs (yes I’m writing in third person) was attacked on the tube in *that* viral video, she thought she was doing “the right thing” by not fighting back, filming it for proof and reporting it to the police.
In a disgraceful turn of events, this time last year when Charlie took her attacker to court she was told to have compassion for him and take the video off social media because it caused him distress and even worse – was misgendered (!!!) in court. You read that right, in a court case about a transphobic hate crime, the (very beautiful and feminine) victim was called sir (?). Worst of all though was that she was told off more than her attacker was by the judge because she filmed her attack without asking her attacker for his consent and age.
This week marks the anniversary of that day, one of the worst days of my life. Getting justice “the right way” ended up being more traumatic than the attack itself and left Charlie with no resolution, so as a way of processing the hurt and bringing around a resolution by turning her bad experience into something good she has set up free self defence classes for trans people.
With the kindness of her supporters on social media and the financial backing of Estrid, Charlie has set up CHARLIES SELF DEFENCE ANGELS.
Starting in London, then taking it national … and hopefully one day international, Charlie is determined to do her bit to ensure no other trans person has to go through what she went through, by that she means she will teach trans people how to put the phobia in transphobia making anyone who attacks them regret trying them, because in the famous words of Charlie Craggs THE T IN LGBT IS FOR TRY ME BITCH
